The dream is over. The American dream. The great experiment in freedom and liberty that is America, is on its deathbed. America is on her deathbed.
Monday, the government announced a plan to buy “toxic assets” from failing companies (with tax money, no less). Of course, in an Ingsoc / doublespeak move straight out of the novel “1984,” they aren’t calling them toxic assets anymore. No, now the word is “legacy aspects.”
Apparently, because paying for this mess is the legacy we have decided to leave our grandchildren.
But that’s not what has me bitter and depressed. No, what is depressing as hell is that the market took a sharp turn for the better upon the release of this news. The American people have spoken with their pocketbooks, and voted with their money. They have made their desires known, as surely as if it were an election – perhaps more so.
They have chosen security over freedom.
I am bitter. I am depressed. I have fought so hard, for so long, to do my part to hang on to our freedom. I have knocked on doors, written letters, made phone calls, marched in the rain, held signs at protests, spent obscene amounts of money, faced interrogations, and risked arrest. I have believed that if we could just hold on long enough, that in the end, people would wake up and we could restore the great American ideal of freedom and prosperity.
I was wrong.
The question in my mind now, is where do we go from here? What is our next move? Will the people of America wake up in time, or will we see our freedom continue to slip away until there is nothing left? Do the people of America even want freedom anymore, let alone care about fighting for it? Is it even worth it to try anymore?
I honestly don’t know.

Did you support a candidate other than John McCain or Barack Obama? Do you have a copy of the Constitution? Do you have respect for America’s founding fathers? Have you ever questioned a government decision?
If your answer is yes, then the Missouri Information Analysis Center thinks you might be a domestic terrorist. The documents speak for themselves, but the links provide more information – including the fact that the Missouri State Police Deparment does not deny the documents, but rather tries to imply that the meaning has been misconstrued.

Think it’s fake? Think there’s no way a legitimate police training document would so blatantly reak of thought-policing? I did, too. At least, I desperately wanted to believe this couldn’t possibly be true. Until I saw the AP News Wire report this morning.

This is scary. Real scary. Obviously, I’m concerned that I fit their arbitrary definition of “terrorist.” I supported Ron Paul, I believe in the Constitution, I own “Freedom To Fascism,” I have political bumper stickers on my car… WAKE UP PEOPLE, when did any of this become a crime?
We’ve been warned for decades, but most people chose to dismiss it as the crazy rantings of lunatics, and were disbelieving and critical, if not outright hostile, towards “conspiracy theorists.” Too bad it looks like they were right, after all.
Does it bother you that our government considers differing political opinions a marker for terrorism?

The state of California is broke. Medical marijuana is already legal with a doctor’s prescription in that state, but now there’s talk of taking it a step further. Under current consideration is a plan to legalize – and tax the sale of – marijuana as a means of generating income for the state.
Federal law classifies marijuana as a Schedule I drug, meaning that it has a high potential for abuse, no medically accepted uses in the United States, and no controlled safety studies. Possession of any scheduled drug without a prescription is illegal, and drugs with no accepted medical uses cannot generally be prescribed.
Anecdotal accounts and some limited studies suggest that marijuana does have the potential to be medically beneficial to certain patients. It is said to reduce pressure in the eyes of persons suffering from glaucoma, and provide relief from nausea, loss of appetite, and pain of cancer patients undergoing radiation or chemotherapy.
Ten states – including California, Colorado, and Nevada – have enacted legislation specifically allowing medical use of marijuana. Laws vary, but generally provide for a specified amounts of marijuana that may be possessed or grown by the patient or primary caregiver with a doctor’s authorized prescription.
Some groups would like to go a step further, and decriminalize marijuana use and possession completely. The argument is that marijuana use is no more dangerous than smoking cigarettes, and causes no greater impairment than drinking alcohol – both of which are legal activities for adults.
On the other side of the coin are those who question the logic of legalizing any recreational drug. They point to concerns of persons driving while under the influence of marijuana – which cannot be field-tested as quickly and reliably as alcohol impairment. Another concern is the unknown long-term effects of use and/or exposure.
The government is challenged with balancing personal liberties against the need to protect public safety.
Should the federal government legalize marijuana (and would you smoke it if they did) ?
